Named after a chemical compound his father uses to make fibre-glass, Jake Webb formed Methyl Ethel in 2013 as a way of getting his bedroom recordings out into the world, where they deserve to be heard. As a multi-instrumentalist, Perth-based Webb wrote, played and recorded everything on his now 4AD-released debut album Oh Inhuman Spectacle, which was initially unveiled by local indie Dot Dash Recordings. 'Idée Fixe' is the atmospheric, tone-setting opener from this brilliant full-length and has now been uncovered with new accompanying visuals by Olivier Groulx (Alt-J, Arcade Fire, Scott Walker). It's a psych-leaning, technicolour and woozy affair as Webb's languid vocal cries out over his laid-back, soulful backing. Having called upon Perth-scene friends Chris Wright (drums) and Thom Stewart (bass), the trio impressed at CMJ and now look forward to shows at SXSW and across Europe over the next few months. -G.O'B.
